Sharif family's journey from Chief Minister of Punjab to Prime Minister

These moments are of historical significance for the politics of the Sharif family and their party. On the one hand, instead of Nawaz Sharif, his brother Shahbaz Sharif is going to become the Prime Minister of the country for the second time, and on the other hand, Nawaz Sharif's daughter Maryam Nawaz is going to hold the post of Chief Minister of Punjab.

Two aspects of these historical moments deserve more attention. Firstly, there has been a change in the distribution of power within the Sharif family and secondly, Nawaz Sharif's parliamentary politics has apparently come to an end.

From the nineties to the 2018 general elections, the elder brother kept the power of the Federation and the younger one as their center of power. It was felt that this formula of power within the family was regularly arranged.

When Nawaz Sharif could not complete his term as Prime Minister in 2017, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi was appointed as Prime Minister. Although at that time there was talk of Shahbaz Sharif getting this position, but it could not actually happen.

However, this was the moment when the General Election 2018 was about a year away and the PML-N was in dire need of a favorable environment for the elections. Thus, Shahbaz Sharif, considered acceptable to the establishment, could have been the best option.

On the other hand, before the recent elections, Nawaz Sharif's return from London and during the election campaign, the slogan of the Muslim League-N was that Nawaz Sharif would become the Prime Minister for the fourth time, however, Shahbaz Sharif had said before the elections that if he got a simple majority in the elections, he would be the prime minister's candidate. Nawaz Sharif will be, if not found, then the decision of the Prime Minister will be made through consultation.

Waz Sharif was the Chief Minister of Punjab, his journey reached from the Chief Minister to the Prime Minister. Similarly, later in the family, this position came to Shahbaz Sharif.

During the PDM regime, when Shahbaz Sharif became the Prime Minister, Hamza Shahbaz was the Chief Minister of Punjab for a short period. Now this post is going to Maryam Nawaz.

Maryam Nawaz has the honor of being the first woman Chief Minister of her family and the country.

The political role of women in the Sharif family has a separate history. Shamim Akhtar, the mother of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif, has no political role, but she has been central in the family.

The political struggle and role of Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz can also be considered as the beginning of the politics of resistance within the Sharif family.

Kulsoom Nawaz's protest and resistance politics started when Pervez Musharraf overthrew the government. It was a tough time for Muslim League-N. Nawaz Sharif was in jail. Kulsoom Nawaz continued to protest and tried to keep the party united, however Kulsoom Nawaz, who won the by-election from NA-120 constituency in Lahore in September 2017, never held any office.

Political analyst Dr. Syed Jafar Ahmad says that "Kulsoom Nawaz's success was that she took her husband out of jail and took him to Saudi Arabia."
