President Arif Alvi has announced to hold general elections of Punjab Assembly on April 30, Sunday.

According to a statement issued by the President's official Twitter account on Friday, the President announced the date after considering the dates suggested by the Election Commission.

Earlier, the Election Commission had suggested the dates from April 30 to May 7 to the President for the elections in Punjab province.

In the press release issued by the Election Commission, it was stated that in the light of the decision of the Supreme Court, the Election Commission has written a letter to the President in which it has suggested the dates from April 30 to May 7 for the elections in Punjab province.

According to the press release, an important meeting was held on Friday under the chairmanship of Chief Election Commissioner Sikandar Sultan Raja, in which the members of the Election Commission besides senior officers participated.

The press release has further said that the Election Commission has also sent a letter to the Governor of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in which it has been written that the Election Commission is awaiting a reply in the light of the Supreme Court's order.

On the other hand, the Peshawar High Court has suspended the schedule by ordering the postponement of by-elections to the National Assembly seats.

On Friday, the Peshawar High Court, while hearing the petitions filed by the Speaker National Assembly to accept the resignations of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf members and postpone the by-elections, has given a safe decision. Justice SM Atiq Shah and Justice Syed Arshad Ali heard the case.

The court ordered the postponement of the by-elections to the seats of the National Assembly and suspended the schedule of the elections to be held on March 16 and 19.

By-elections were to be held for a total of 24 seats in the National Assembly from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Tehreek-e-Insaf's lawyer, Barrister Gauhar Khan, took the position that without verification, the Speaker did not accept the resignations of 123 members when the PTI leadership asked to accept the resignations of 123 members together.

He told the court that after January 14, when the situation changed, PTI had decided to go to the assembly again, on which Justice Arshad Ali inquired whether the members had approached the Speaker to withdraw their resignation.

Barrister Gohar Khan said in response that "Party Chairman Imran Khan announced on the media that we are going back to the Assembly and that is enough."

Besides, PTI's lawyer Barrister Gauhar requested the court to postpone the March 16 elections.

Deputy Attorney General Sanaullah told the court that the PTI members resigned and did not go to the Speaker after that.

He further said that the elections are going to be held and all the arrangements are complete.

The court issued a notice to the parties and adjourned the hearing till March 7.
